The hybrid kit car

Want to build your own kit car but be environmentally friendly as well? It’s now possible to do this by buying the plans to build a copy of the XR3 Personal Transit Vehicle (PTV) prototype. This is a two passenger plug-in hybrid that gives the owner great fuel economy.  Driven conservatively, it can achieve 125 mpg on diesel and 225 mpg when diesel and electric power are used together.
It drives like a conventional car and has been designed using existing hybrid technology. Hybrid cars are fuel-efficient as they are powered by either a diesel or petrol engine with the addition of an electric motor.  They are also low emission cars, as they burn less fuel and produce fewer carbon dioxide emissions.
With a lightweight structure of just 1480 pounds, the XR3 Hybrid has a top speed of 80 mph and fast acceleration. It looks different from a conventional car as it is a three wheeler with a clam-shell canopy. The acceleration is achieved because of the vehicle’s light weight.
As it’s a plug-in hybrid, it’s possible to drive on electric power alone for a range of about forty miles.
The XR3 Hybrid’s two front wheels are powered by the combustion engine, while the electric motor powers the single rear wheel.  The ground provides the connection between the two power systems.  A throttle mechanism allows phase-in between the two systems.  Switches on the dashboard allow the driver to select which power mode they use.  In the hybrid mode, there is a lot of power available for quick acceleration, although excessive use of the acceleration will reduce the fuel economy.
You can buy the plans to build the XR3 Hybrid at home in a normal garage or workshop. All you need to do is purchase the other components according to your personal specifications and follow the step-by-step instructions in the plans.
